Hadrian's Wall, Inklings, and Shakespeare.

Day 7:  Most of today was taken up driving from Edingburgh to Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Good-bye Edinburgh, good-bye Scotland.

Next stop?  Hadrian's Wall, and an old Roman fort/settlement on it.

When you see pictures of the wall, this is what you see and you wonder, "How did that keep anyone out/in?"Then you go to a museum and learn it used to be this tall and much more fortified and foreboding.
With very strict rules about entry and exits.  All the old stones were scavenged to build many of the cathedrals, sheep walls, and nearby towns and cities over the centuries.

In continuing the Minions learning about the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, they became Romans for a few hours.

Yes, ancient dice.

After learning all about the settlement, we then headed out into the sheep pasture where the site was.

Yes, sheep live in, climb on, poop all over the historic site.

Despite the cold, wind, and rain we ventured out to see for ourselves the various things we had just read about.

On the road again.  We couldn't go to Manchester like we'd originally hoped, but we could take pictures of the sign where we would have had to exit.

Day 8:
We arrived very late at night to our lodging at Stratford-Upon-Avon.  Why haven't we looked into the Youth Hostels Association before now?!? Not only was it affordable, but it was also extremely family friendly.

This particular hostel has an interesting history and is inside a Georgian Mansion.

After a filling breakfast it was off to tour the sights in the birthplace of Shakespeare.

Time for some serious nerding out.

Always the Drama Queen.

The princes and the jesters.

Totally need to go back to see this museum if we ever get the chance.

One of the coolest public libraries we have ever seen.  Go Carnegie, this was a great choice.

Finally, the home of Shakespeare himself.

So across the street from here is a Dr. Who store brave enough to store a Dalek in their window.

We'd rather not be exterminated though.

A lovely idea for a person we love.

Farewell Shakespeare's home, we bought so much stuff at the shop next door.  From Manga versions of some of his best plays to a complete anthology with footnotes of all his works.

View of the gardens and the shop next door.  Also getting a treat.

As per our norm...the minions are swarmed by Asiatic tourists.

Princess Lumpy got an extra ice cream cone out of the deal too.

See?  Princess....Lumpy!

Eating her free ice cream.

Peter Rabbit store...completely devoted to Beatrix Potter...it was surreal.

Wait...whaa...what if Shakespeare was a time traveling wizard?!?  Now that's a thought.

Well the sun finally came out so just before leaving for Oxford for lunch we got one last picture.

That way to Kensington.

Lady History would have loved to have gone into that store, we know it.

We made it to The Eagle and Child, our destination for lunch and the meeting place of the Inklings.

We're leaving for Narnia!

After lunch it's off to Oxford University.

We spent so much time at Oxford and Stratford-Upon-Avon that we were unable to make it to Stonehenge.  We had a great day though, so it doesn't matter.

Farewell Oxford, back to London we must go for we fly on the morrow.

Lady Marine, Lady Navy, Sir Medic, and Lady Health will find this humorous to be sure.  So that's where townies go after secondary.
